A CONCRETE MASTERPIECE

When you are lucky enough to be engaged by an industry professional the whole project is elevated – this is A Concrete Masterpiece. The appreciation of material, detailing and finishing is uncompromised in this striking family home.

Concrete being the owners profession meant it was always going to feature in this home, which has been effortlessly executed in the burnished concrete slab and off-form walls. A rich materials palette and minimal detailing were therefore essential in creating balance and integral to adding warmth and texture into the home. This resulted in moody masculine spaces like the kitchen and bathrooms with surfaces you can’t help but touch. Think terrazzo, textured stone, ultra-matt joinery, black stained timber, plush wool carpet and spaces finished with the softest sheer curtains. Gentle curves were introduced sparingly throughout the exterior and interior of the home to challenge the masculinity, ultimately creating a sense of poise and harmony. But the real hero, the Irish green perforated steel staircase. A brave and bold choice that sings as you enter the home.

callida consulting

A vibrant, light filled office located in the heart of Canberra. The open plan work zone and collaborative zones were cleverly designed to offer staff flexibility in the way they work both individually and in teams. The well equipped kitchen was purposefully separated from the neighbouring boardroom with a glazed operable wall system to allow Callida Consulting to comfortably host client and industry events. A playful yet sophisticated finishes palette was executed. The combination of warm oak timber paired with charcoal and crisp white surfaces is brought to life with pops of yellow drawn from company branding which is spotted throughout the office. Natural light softly filters through the entire office space from not only the street side facade but also from the plant filled atrium within the core of the building.

Chadwick Designs Showroom

A functional multi-purpose space was required within the Chadwick Design’s showroom in Canberra, but by no means was functionality to outweigh it being a fun and inspirational space to be. The space is for staff to retreat during breaks or offer them a quiet space to work. It is also a space to hold creative meetings with designers and their clients. Inspiration was drawn from a Luke Chiswell original artwork previously purchased by the owners. Colour was not used sparingly, introduced in an organic custom painted mural which is softened with a sheer curtain and the hero of the space, the pink kitchen. Staff and visitors of all age smile upon entry, you can’t ask for more than that.

National Health Co-op

The latest addition to the suite of National Health Co-op medical practices located in the grounds of the Australian National University. This medical facility is split over two floors, connected via a central feature staircase clad in recycled timber. Creating a space that was warm, inviting and calming was paramount to the success of the facility, steering well away from the clinical stereotype. Waiting areas are separated from Doctor’s rooms by angled levers, creating privacy to these spaces while allowing natural light to filter throughout. Pathways to treatment and consultation rooms are brightened through the introductions of feature gradient blue doors and strip lighting. Curves have been introduced where possible to add softness to the medical practice. The needs of medical staff and patients was carefully addressed to ensure this is a comfortable space for all.

2019 HIA Riverina Bathroom design of the year

2019 HIA Riverina Bathroom of the year

The renovation of a family home, located in country New South Wales. Aesthetically the design is classic contemporary in nature while remaining sympathetic to the traditional style of the home. Design solutions were implemented to ensure all spaces felt light and spacious. The bathrooms aren’t short of aesthetic features, yet the overall spaces have a strong sense of balance and continuity. A calming selection of blue artisan patterned floor tiles are offset with textural wall tiles, warm timber tones and crisp white walls. Custom brushed brass tapware and accessories are the real hero of the space, simple elegant fittings that add a modern touch to both bathrooms. The ambient spaces are filled with personality, after all every home needs a sanctuary or two.

a mid-century dream

The owners of this stunning Canberra home have a love, deep understanding and heartfelt appreciation for Mid-Century design. They wanted their much loved sitting space and combined laundry/ bathroom to reflect just this. The transformed spaces were based on the composition of contrasting colour, geometric forms and layering of texture, resulting in balanced spaces that welcome you with open arms. Each element of the design including finishes, furniture items and accessories were carefully sourced and commissioned where required to ensure they worked perfectly in the space and alongside each other. A tranquil bathroom and a sitting room you would never want to leave.

The heart of the home

A new build in an outer suburb of Canberra, with no preconceptions welcomed the opportunity to create a modern industrial home with an uncompromised level of custom detailing . Creating the unexpected and pushing boundaries were high priorities when designing. Studio & You developed a neutral and timeless palette of luxury finishes whilst identifying the importance of softening spaces to offset the burnished concrete floors, large expanses of glass and high-level raked ceilings. It is hard to look past the 3.8m cantilever kitchen island bench, the heart of the home where the family gather each day. Wherever you look this home has a sense of depth, balance and comfort.

a home to be lived in

A modest house in Canberra’s Inner North transformed into a playful yet classic family home. Through major renovation and extension including the addition of a second story the residence has been modernised while retaining the charm of the existing home, something often overlooked. Studio & You designed spaces to suit the needs of little people through schooling years and their parents individually. The generous open living space connecting to an outdoor entertaining area allows for quality family time, while intimate spaces like a library overlooking the front garden and upstairs children’s rumpus offer smaller spaces to retreat. Playful in nature, artisan patterned tiles, pops of colour and feature light fittings bring life and character to spaces throughout. A home that is light filled and welcoming; a home to be lived in.

The texture house

A well-deserved renovation to a quaint cottage in Canberra’s north. With an emphasis on functionality, the existing small footprint kitchen and bathroom spaces were replanned to ensure that every inch of space was used with intent. Both spaces are bold in nature, with the kitchen centred around the statement freestanding oven and striking terrazzo stone creating a perfect space to entertain their friends and family. Whilst the bathroom flooded with natural light and earthy tones, exuding luxury and an overwhelming sense of calm. a timeless abode

The living and kitchen space within the much loved home of a growing family and their beloved pet was given a new lease of life. A contemporary approach on classic design was introduced to compliment traditional features of the existing home. What was once a dark kitchen that lacked in bench space and storage is now a spacious kitchen that looks out onto the outdoor entertaining area and surrounding gardens. Oak flooring, profiled joinery, handmade tiles and decorative handles were brought together to create a fresh and timeless space that will stand the test of time. The contemporary shaker

A kitchen and dining renovation to reflect the needs of a lively young family. This transformation was undertaken to better suit the needs of a family that believe the kitchen is the core of their home. A large expansive island bench ensures that the whole family is involved in all aspects of meal time. The window splash back allows for an abundance of natural light within the space but also strengthens the connection between the adjoining outdoor entertaining area. A classic approach was taken when developing the overall aesthetic allowing the kitchen to still feel connected to the existing home, but with a contemporary edge. The ability for the client to customise the space was supported with the inclusion of open shelves to allow for personalisation and flexibility. A joyful space perfectly suited to an equally beautiful family.

the creatives dream

A comfortable space to work, rest, create and play is the essence of this multi-purpose room. Drawing inspiration from the owners creative mind the space evolved into an intimate space with so much depth and character. Large expanses of open shelving are filled with a collection of treasured books and personal hand made items. The colour palette was designed to subtly compliment other areas of the home yet stand alone, as a serene retreat which can be closed off from the rest of the house. A large textured rug, cosy lounges, soft window furnishings and loose cushions were introduced to create softness and warmth within the space. A space to get lost alone or a space to be filled and enjoyed by many, the creatives dream.

The 15 Foot Fireplace

An expansive family home with a beautiful outlook set amongst scenic bush land. Being understanding of the desire to embody a contemporary country lifestyle, Studio & You undertook the design of this renovation to ensure the home was better suited to the family and their dreams. Strong emphasis was put on the overall aesthetic of the renovation resulting in a palette that has a connection to the outdoors and aligns with the rest of the home’s interior. A more defined entrance allowed the home to give off the ‘wow’ factor on arrival it deserves. The flexible living space now has the ability to entertain extended family and friends as well as provide a cosy spot to enjoy in front of the impressive fireplace during winter months. The overall height and scale of the space was carefully considered when detailing joinery and selecting materials to ensure their scale was complimentary whilst still achieving the desired layer of texture and warmth.
